OFW Online Marketers
Aside from leverage and automation, there are a couple of reasons why an OFW should choose to be an online marketer.

There are a couple of reasons why you should choose to be an OFW online marketer. Aside from leverage and automation, here are some of the reasons that I’ve got from my research. This is specifically for OFWs just like you and me:

Majority of OFWs Have Insufficient Income

Last September 4, 2013 the National Statistics Office (NSO) released a very disturbing statistics about OFWs.
Two in every five OFWs are able to save from their cash remittances.

Number of OFWs Who Had Savings from Cash Remittance Sent: 2011 and 2012

The total number of OFWs who sent cash remittances to their families from April to September 2012 was 1.9 million OFWs. Of this, 42.2 percent were able to set aside savings from their cash remittances. In 2011, about 46.4 percent OFWs had savings from cash remittances sent to their families.

Regardless of the amount of the cash remittances sent, for every ten OFWs, six (56.9%) were able to save less than 25 percent of the total amount received, about two (23.5%) were able to save from 25 percent to 49 percent of it, and two (19.6%) saved 50 percent or more.

Distribution of Overseas Filipino Workers with Savings from Cash Remittances Sent by Percentage of Cash Remittance Set Aside for Savings: 2011 and 2012

Just to give you a clearer explanation:

If there are a 100 OFWs that are earning, let’s say P20,000 per month, only 40 of those OFWs are able to save money. Of those 40 OFWs 24 people are able to set aside P5,000 per month, 8 people are able to set aside P5,000 to P10,000 per month and 8 people are able to set aside P10,000 or more.

NSO also estimated that there are around 2.22 million OFWs meaning around 1.27 million OFWs are not able to set aside and save money. And chances are you’re reading this manifesto is probably because you’re one of those who belong to the 1.27 million OFWs.

Why is it? What is the reason behind this?

A separate research reveals that at least 60% of OFWs are still poor because they are not able to save money while working abroad.

And here are the couple of reasons:

  • They are still paying off the debt that they’ve used in order to work abroad.
  • Their income is insufficient for the expenses of their families back in the Philippines.
  • The money that should have gone to savings goes to vices.
  • They are spending more than what they are earning.
  • The agreed salary was not met.
  • Victim of illegal recruitment.

For those who are able to save money most of the time the money goes to an unexpected expense. These include illnesses, accidents, loss of property, natural and man-made disasters, climate-change impact and the lingering global financial crisis.

Not being able to save money is also the reason why a vast majority of OFWs are not able to take a yearly vacation. Some took two years up to six years before they can take a vacation back in the Philippines.

But once you’ve setup an online business you can now have an additional income stream that will allow you to save money.

Most Employers Are Not Allowing OFWs to Take a Second Job

In the United Arab Emirates where 14.9% of OFWs are working, strict labor rules are discouraging them from taking on part-time work. A safe option is to take on a home-based and computer-related job that doesn’t require one to work in an office setting, typically an online business.

You can’t be at someone else’s company since offices are subjected to inspection. If the inspector finds out that you’re sponsored by another company and you’re working at another office, there’s going to be a problem. The company that you are working part-time for will be fined.

You Are Already Stressed Out In Your Day Job That You Rather Spend Your Free Time At Home

You may consider part-time employment ideas like teaching music and language, baby-sitting, mentoring children that are done outside company premises and during your free time. These are also safe options but these will require you to physically do the work.

Would you rather choose to earn extra income doing extra physical work rather than doing it at the comfort of your home in front of a computer?

By setting up an online business you don’t need to physically work for a second job.
